My name is Maria and I moved from Cyprus to Leuven, Belgium a few years ago to start my PhD. After settling in, I remember searching online for local volunteering opportunities, as this was something I’d enjoyed doing in the past. That’s how I came across Serve the City Leuven! Initially, I thought being a newcomer and not speaking Dutch would mean I would have a hard time getting involved, however STC proved me entirely wrong by being such a wonderful and welcoming organization. It is inspiring to see how STC brings people together and steps in to help with the local needs, whatever these may be. I’ve the opportunity to help out with a few different projects so far, from cooking and serving meals to painting walls and carrying furniture around – and it genuinely feels really nice to help out while having lots of fun and meeting new people. The STC organizers play a huge role in bringing people closer to the community and I am very thankful to be a part of this. Definitely looking forward to the next projects!
