‘The Voice’ is the international student newspaper from the Katholic University Leuven. A few months ago one of our STC volunteers (who happened to be an editor for The Voice) did an interview and it just got published…enjoy! (and thanks Patchara for writing it!)

Students throw a party and raise 390 euros!!!
It was a great surprise to get an email from a student (Steven) who had decided with his friends from his masters program to throw a party and give the profit to Serve the City Leuven! What a great boost of confidence for us as we are starting a campaign to raise funds so that we can continue the work of Serve the City in Leuven, but also because we hope Leuven will becomes a launching pad to help start Serve the City in other cities in Belgium and around the world. Thank you students for your energy, creativity and financial support. Here is a pic of the crazy bunch who pulled this off….

Introducing CityTalk Leuven
Through Serve the City people come together to serve in all kinds of project. As a result friendship start, so we felt the need to create some spaces where people can continue to meet each other and continue some of the conversations that were started while painting a school, playing with kids, serving the elderly or cleaning a dirty basement of a soup kitchen.
We dreamed of a creative space where people could openly talk about things that matter in life, things that make a difference and the values that are at the foundation of Serve the city and our inspiration, the life and message of Jesus Christ.
So we launched CityTalk Leuven in October and we have done a few experimental evenings already and they have been a lot of fun, informing, challenging and inspiring. Topics ranged from ‘the problem of suffering’, ‘the problem of human trafficking’ to a ‘game night’ and a ‘creative night’. We have been hosting them in a cafe (de Lange Trappen). You can see more on www.citytalkleuven.be or Facebook.
We hope CityTalk Leuven will continue to be inspiring, fun and a catalyst for good in our world!

We were nominated for the pluim, an initiative of the King Boudewijn Foundation to recognize organisations and people who do good things. We didn’t win it, but we still received 500 euros! It’s a real honor and it was a lot of fun to go to RobTV for interviews. There was also a short documentary made about Serve the City Leuven. Thank you for all of you who voted for Serve the City! The people who ended up winning were an older couple who were involved with the scouts for the last 40 years. They are a great example of servanthood and we are glad they ended up winning.
A great first year!
Less then a year ago Serve the City launched in Leuven and it’s been an amazing ride. Over the past year, we had the priviledge to work with 20 different organisations on 6 different action days (ranging from 1-5 days per action days). It started last summer with a week long serving initiative and turned into regular (every 6 week) action days. We got recognized by LOKO (Leuven student organisation), Leo XIII seminarie gave us a great office to use and 4 interns came on board to help with the logistics + a core team formed. We hosted several parties and the first ever STC Expo to tell the story of Serve the City in Leuven. Over 250 volunteers are now networked with Serve the City Leuven! Lots of friendships have been ignited, people served and lots of love that freely went around in Leuven.
Love is a fruit in season at all times, and within reach of every hand.
Mother Theresa
We anticipate a great year with new contacts and partnerships in Leuven!
With hope,
Horace
PS. Summer opportunities will come online in a couple weeks!
Share your story!
The last STC Leuven action days in Leuven ended with 50+ volunteers giving of themselves to make their city a better place. Do you have a story to tell? Why don’t you comment on this post and let people know. You can be an encouragement and inspiration to someone by simply sharing your experience.
There are so many amazing things that happened this past year. So many people who were touched, so much love that freely went around in Leuven, so many different people involved. One of the pics that really touched me was from a project were kids (from Fabota) went to an elderly home (Capucijnenhof) to paint together in preperation for the Expo. Just beautiful!
